The Democratic Party establishment is quietly freaking out about something they never saw coming: socialist Zohran Mamdani’s meteoric rise in the NYC mayoral race.

While the far-left faction celebrates their new communist champion, the traditional wing of the party is having what can only be described as a full-scale panic attack. Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn just called Mamdani a “911 moment” for the Democratic party – and he’s not being dramatic.

When Your Own Pollster Sounds the Alarm

Mark Penn isn’t some right-wing commentator throwing around accusations. He’s a Clinton insider who knows exactly how Democratic politics work, and he’s terrified of what Mamdani represents for the party’s future.

Penn recently appeared on FOX News to warn that Mamdani’s rise represents an existential crisis for Democrats. When your own party’s polling experts are calling your candidate a “911 moment,” you know the establishment is in full-blown damage control mode.

The Ranked Choice Voting “Accident”

Penn also pointed to something that should have Democrats even more worried: Mamdani’s victory might be the result of the “insane process of ranked choice voting” rather than actual broad support.

This means the Democratic establishment accidentally created a system that allowed a communist to slip through their primary process without the traditional gatekeeping that usually keeps radicals out. They built the weapon that’s now being used against them.

The Optics Nightmare Democrats Created

Conservative writer Mollie Hemingway from The Federalist put her finger on exactly why the Democratic establishment is panicking: the optics are catastrophic.

Hemingway pointed out that the policies Mamdani advocates have been tried before in various places and have consistently failed. But more importantly for Democrats, this makes their existing problem with mainstream Americans infinitely worse.

Already Out of Touch, Now Actually Communist

Democrats were already struggling with the perception that they’re out of step with mainstream Americans. Having an actual communist as their mayoral candidate in America’s largest city doesn’t exactly help with that image problem.

As Hemingway noted, this “just makes that problem worse” for a party already fighting accusations of being too far left for ordinary voters.
